The leader lights the North candle, saying: "I honor the North, powers of Earth We use salt to symbolize the Earth, our foundation. May it never give way beneath us. May you always stand firm."
Group repeats "May you always stand firm" as salt is passed around circle, and each participant tastes a pinch.
The leader the East candle, saying: "I honor the East, powers of Air. We use Incense to symbolize the air we breathe. May it never be stagnant. May you always breathe free."
Group repeats "May you always breathe free" as incense is passed around circle and each participant breathes in the smoke.
The leader lights the South candle, saying: "I honor the South, powers of Fire. We gather around the hearth fire. May it always keep us warm. May you never be left out in the cold."
Group gathers around the fire and repeats "May you never be left out in the cold."
The leader lights the West candle, saying: "I honor the West, powers of Water. This water is the same that flows through our bodies and the land in which we live. May it always nourish life. May you never thirst"
Group repeats "may you never thirst" as water is passed around circle and each participant takes a sip.
The leader lights the center candle, saying: "I honor the center, the above and below, divine spirit that it the source and destination of all life." Group joins in: "The divine abounds everywhere and dwells in everything; the many are one."1
